polar bear Evolutionary history
It is believed that brown bears entered the Northern, Arctic region in search of food but were not able to return to the Southern region due to the glacier formations. Scientists believe that most of the brown bears that entered the Northern region died, however, bears that had a certain coat color and thickness adapted to the polar region environment. Over time, the brown bears' fur turned white which helped them hide from their prey which was an advantage for hunting. Their molar teeth adapted to make them capable of hunting seals and ripping their bodies apart. These brown bears evolved into what is known today as the polar bear. Polar bears have no other known ancestors other than the brown bear.
